My artistic practice is driven by my love of narrative space and my desire to create worlds within worlds. I enjoy creating scenes within which figures emerge and stories unfold. I seek to manipulate pictorial space, offering an immersive experience in which the viewer’s imagination unfurls.

I draw from observation and from memory, recording fragments in sketchbooks and folding ‘concertina’ sketchbooks. I enjoy drawing people as they go about their daily lives, as well as those performing a craft or skill, such as dancers. Such impressions are fleeting and I try to draw ‘the memory of the thing’.

These drawings are re-imagined in compositions which explore multiple perspectives, scales and rhythms. Large charcoal drawings are abraded, disrupted and erased as a means of exploiting unplanned marks, patterns and textures, a process that often reveals unexpected stories and spaces. The drawings lead to paintings, where narratives continue to evolve.

I am inspired by art, history, literature, myths, music and nature and I have noticed that motifs are starting to appear and recur, for example figures, birds, trees, houses, dancers, movement and transformation.

I work with charcoal, pen, pastels, watercolour, gouache, oil and acrylic paint, producing drawings, paintings, prints (monotypes and woodcuts) and short stop-frame animations. I often play with collage and processes promoted by the surrealists, such as decalcomania, and parsemage. I enjoy exploring new materials and learning new techniques.
